Naturalization Workshop

Dear Colleagues,

I am writing on behalf of the Oregon Chapter of the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA).

We have been truly moved by the outpouring of support we have received from members of the Oregon bar following the 2016 presidential election.

In response to your generous offers of support, Oregon AILA is organizing free naturalization workshops to help our eligible immigrant community members apply for US citizenship.

Oregon AILA is working with community groups to provide legal assistance to low-income immigrants and to encourage eligible individuals to apply for US citizenship. A Portland-based nonprofit, SOAR (Sponsors Organized to Assist Refugees), has hosted several citizenship days in years past. SOAR organizes naturalization workshops, provides community outreach, and eligibility screening for workshop participants, as well as trains and organizes pro bono attorney and law student volunteers. Due to budget cuts however, SOAR did not receive funding to provide the citizenship day workshops this year. We are asking you to fill this need. AILA is asking for help in fundraising to support SOAR in organizing several upcoming workshops. $5,000 allows SOAR organize and host one naturalization workshop, where up to 50 people can complete applications to become US citizens with free legal assistance.

Many of you have asked what can be done to help protect Oregon’s immigrant families following the surprising election results. There is very real fear in the community about what the change in Administration will mean, as well as a rise in hateful rhetoric and actions directed at marginalized groups. In addition to providing much needed legal services, these workshops are an opportunity to let Oregon’s immigrant families know that they are welcomed, valued, and supported.

Donations in any amount are greatly appreciated and are tax-deductible. Donations can be made to the “Oregon AILA Foundation,” a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, using Paypal, or checks can be mailed to: Erin McKee, AILA Oregon Treasurer Dalton Law Office, PLLC 2904 Main Street Suite 100 Vancouver, WA 98663.

On behalf of AILA Oregon, I greatly appreciate your generosity.
